To lead the way in infection control, our mobile unit is giving us a clean break.

With the rise of superbugs like MRSA and C.difficile in British hospitals, the NHS is under increasing pressure to improve the cleanliness of its hospitals and therefore minimise the risk of dangerous diseases like these from spreading.

It is with this in mind that staff at the Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust have designed a pioneering mobile cleansing unit, capable of disinfecting any hospital equipment including beds anywhere on the premises. The MeQ unit was developed by John Downes in the estates team and Val Leggett, nurse consultant for infection control at Norfolk and Waveney. Thought to be the first mobile cleansing unit in the country, it can clean equipment away from hospital wards, minimising the disruption to patients, and will soon be available to other trusts and organisations to buy or rent.

In the current climate of pressure to control the spread of infection around hospitals, this ground-breaking invention has been well received by health professionals all over the country. According to Robert Donald, Innovation Manager from Health Enterprise East, “This is exactly the kind of brilliant idea that we champion. Innovation in the NHS is very much alive and this unit from the mental health trust is proof of that."

The unit won an innovation award at the NHS East of England Health and Social Care Awards.
